What is a Glimmer?
Valerie Kaur, author of “See No Stranger: A Memoir and Manifesto of Revolutionary Love”, tells us that Glimmers are those seemingly ordinary moments of wonder in your life — when you are arrested by the sunset or swell of music or your child’s face, and the line between you and everything blurs — are not throw-away moments. They are actually portals into the sacred nature of things.
Glancing at life through a more positive perspective can make even the dreariest days seem delightful. Even when things look bleak, there are tiny moments of light that shine through—glimmers of hope, joy, and beauty.
Noticing these glimmers, these micro moments of connection, joy or insight, is important because they remind us of life’s simple pleasures and keep us motivated to push through hardship.
Glimmers come in many forms. It might be the smile of a stranger passing by, a bird singing cheerfully outside your window, or the giggle of a child at the playground. In tough times, the warmth of the sun on your face, a soothing cup of tea, a beautiful flower, or your favorite song on the radio can act as glimmers that pierce the gloom.
Glimmers don’t have to last long—even a fleeting moment of connection, comfort, or peace can be enough to lift your spirits.
When you notice glimmers, take a moment to appreciate them. Let them remind you of life’s goodness, even in small doses. Let them revive your hope that, despite challenges, there is still joy to be found.
Glimmers show us that beauty exists all around us—we just have to open our eyes to see it. They reassure us that, no matter how hard things get, light will always find a way to break through the darkness. So the next time you’re going through a rough patch, be on the lookout for glimmers.
Notice the small things that bring you delight. Use them to practice The Ten Second Rule. Savor those moments, however brief, and let them nourish your spirit for the journey ahead.
