We typically inherit our values from the family and the culture we grew up in, but as we grow older and become more self aware, we may change those sets of values according to our personal beliefs, and we may start changing or incorporating new ones that are more relevant to our present experience.
Oftentimes, we walk through this world not really knowing what our values are. If we don’t have a clear understanding of what makes us tick, then we’ll have a hard time trying to change pieces of ourselves (or authentically responding to others in a healthy manner).
Values play a role in shaping your goals, priorities, and even your identity. And acting in accordance with your values can help you achieve a more meaningful and joyful life.
Here’s a list of values that may support you in exploring what matters to you in life. They may inform you how to better spend your time and energy.
In your exploration you will also find what the purpose of your life as a human being is. Values clarification is crucial to make choices that you consider worthy. This is not a one-day activity.
You may want to take your time, contemplating the values that you are drawn to, and, in that way, gradually discover what is important for you. Your values will inform you on what you are looking for in the people you associate with as well.
Contemplate These Reflexions:
- How and when were your top values formed?
- What person or people most influenced your values?
- How are your values similar to and different from those of others?
- How do your values play a role in your everyday life?
